Computer Science & Engineering Building (EBU3B)University of California San Diego, CA

This four-floor (plus full basement) computer science facility is served by power from the 12kV Campus Distribution loop. Utilities include: sewer water, high temperature heating hot water, chilled water, onsite emergency generator, connections to campus-wide telecommunications, fiber & copper data backbone, EMCS, wireless LAN, lighting control system, data center, security and fire alarm systems.

The variable volume, cooling only, built in central equipment, located at the basement level, includes adjustable pitch vane axial supply return fans, chilled water coils, filters and sound attenuators. Supply air is distributed via medium velocity ducts to variable volume supply terminals with downstream heating coils. Controls are electronic DDC networked to a campus-wide EMCS.

Lighting design is based on the latest T-5 high-output indirect fixture, equipped with motion sensor. This environment tends to encourage productivity. The distributed power for the facility will be two (2) 2000 ampere 12kV to 277/480V unit substation with tie circuit breaker for flexibility.

A notable design feature flexibility for user re-configuration over the life of the facility in the design. End-use telecommunication needs were taken into consideration from the beginning of the project. The estimated utility incentive from SDG&E for this project is $89,000.

Owner: University of California, San Diego
Size: 149,000 SF
Estimated Construction Cost: $31,000,000
Completion Date: 2003
